In Math we are beginning our work with multiplication.  We will be adding to our Math Notebooks daily and will be participating in small group activities to reinforce our multiplication skills.  Students should be reviewing their multiplication facts through the 9s.  5-10 minutes of practice nightly with help students master these basic facts!  There are many games available online to reinforce these skills, also students can make flash cards from paper and pencil!

SPOT Club

Sullivan's Power of Thinking Club will be introduced next week!  The link is up to the right! I'm looking forward to the students' expanding their knowledge.

Power of Thinking Club - Students demonstrate the power of their brains and go “above and beyond” the learning that takes place in the classroom on a daily basis.

o   Available to all students in 4th grade

o   Students are challenged by choice to answer up to 91 questions that have a variety of topics and allow for mastery of new knowledge.  Club time will take place during recess, lunch recess and at home if the student wishes to research and learn answers at that time.  Students come to me to answer the questions from their memory (again during recess or lunch recess).  If they are correct, they are awarded a point, if not they may try again the next school day.  Students who reach 16 points will be inducted into the Power of Thinking Hall of Fame which will always remain in the classroom.

o   Five Areas of Study

§  Social Studies

§  Science

§  Math

Thanks for supporting your student in their efforts.  Remember, this is a challenge by choice club and not a requirement.

Week of October 3rd

Welcome to another great week in 4th grade!

This week we continue to work on comprehension and fluency in our reading.   In Spelling we are focusing on Long and Short a sounds in our words.  Our test will be Tuesday, October 11th - this gives students plenty of time to study even with our shorter week this week.

In math we are working on problem solving with multi-digit addition and subtraction.  We will be moving forward with multiplication starting next week.  Now is a great time to brush up on those multiplication facts!!  Check out the Homework page to the right for a link to many multiplication games students can play online to brush up on their skills. Another way to study is to make flashcards and review 10 or so nightly adding more as your students shows that he or she knows them well!

Book orders went home on Monday.  There are lots of great choices for the 4th graders!  I have also added our code so that families may order online if they wish.  For every online order we earn a free book for our class! You are welcome to send your paper order in to the classroom as well. Orders are due October 18th.  Please see this week's email for our online code and a link to the Scholastic website.

Please be sure your students are writing down their nightly reading and completing homework.  Students should be writing down their assignments daily in the classroom.  Check out the homework page if you are unsure of the daily assignments.

Have a great week!  Check back soon for pictures of students learning in 4th grade!
